It was a day filming boats for my YouTube channel, AQUAHOLIC, with the good people of Princess Motor Yacht Sales, who are also dealers for Chris-Craft. We had three large Princess yachts lined up for full yacht tours, but perhaps whilst I was there I might like two film a Chris-Craft Catalina 34, they mused? I didn’t need asking twice, I’d filmed two Chris-Craft previously for the channel, they are outstanding boats and always popular with viewers of AQUAHOLIC. But just to really make this one special, we were to give the boat a run out too.
The Catalina 34 is perhaps the ultimate day boat. The cockpit stretches the full length, creating a massive (and very safe) day space full of comfortable seating, inviting sun loungers and innovative features (like foldaway seats, a side swim door and a well-equipped galley). Incredibly, there’s even a small cabin that takes up no deck space (it’s hidden beneath the helm console and the forward lounger) but provides toilet facilities and a double berth. Twin outboard engines (colour coded perfectly to the rich deep metallic blue of the hull) also improve cockpit space by being transom mounted rather than inboard. But more than that, they provide searing performance.
The Mallorcan coast is the perfect environment for exploiting that performance – warm, calm and great scenery. With a top speed well north of 40 knots, making 30 knots a relaxed canter, and the capable hull absorbing that speed with ease, the only question left was how long could we get away with before they started missing their boat?
